Orhan Pamuk

Winner of the 2006 Nobel Prize for Literature

Orhan Pamuk speakerOrhan Pamuk is a Nobel Prize-winning novelist and is the recipient of numerous national and international literary awards. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature on October 2006, becoming the first Turkish person to receive a Nobel Prize. He is currently a Fellow with Columbia University’s Committee on Global Thought and holds an appointment in Columbia’s Middle East and Asian Languages and Cultures at The School of the Arts.

Orhan Pamuk studied architecture at the Istanbul Technical University before leaving to become a full-time writer. He graduated from the Institute of Journalism at the University of Istanbul in 1976. He was a visiting scholar at Columbia University from 1985 to 1988, a period which also included a visiting fellowship at the University of Iowa. He returned to Istanbul, where he lived until 2006, before returning to the US to take up a position as a visiting professor at Columbia.[/expand]

Dr. Kirsty Duncan

One of the Nobel Prize-winning Canadians on the IPCC, Expert on Pandemic Influenza

Kirsty Duncan speakerDr. Kirsty Duncan is internationally recognized as a leading expert in the area of pandemic influenza, environmental change, and the impact on human health. In 2008, Dr. Duncan was formally recognized as one of the Nobel Prize winning Canadians on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. She is a professor of Health Studies at the University of Toronto and is the current MP for the Liberal Party of Canada in the Toronto riding of Etobicoke North.

Kirsty earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Medical Geography in 1993 and went on to gain recognition for her groundbreaking efforts in leading an expedition to uncover the cause of the 1918 Spanish influenza, history’s greatest killer. Amongst her many accolades Kirsty has been nominated for ‘Canada’s Top 40 Under 40’ in 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2001. As well as being nominated for the prestigious Order of Ontario in 2000 and 2001, she appeared in the millennium edition of Canada’s Who’s Who in 1999.[/expand]

Professor Muhammad Yunus speaker In 1976, Muhammad Yunus founded the Grameen Bank to make loans to poor Bangladeshis. Since then the Grameen Bank has issued more than US$ 5.1 billion to 5.3 million borrowers. The success of the Grameen model has inspired similar efforts throughout the developing world and even in industrialized nations including the USA. His methods have also been applied to Burma and in Kosovo with great success and he is now embarking upon an effort to eliminate global poverty.
