He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine in 2002 (jointly with Sydney Brenner and Bob Horvitz), for the work they had done in understanding the development of the nematode (worm) Caenorhabditis elegans. He was listed among the UK’s 100 most powerful people by the Observer newspaper and received his knighthood for services to genome research in the 2001 New Year’s Honours.

“John Sulston’s achievements rank alongside our greatest biological & medical discoveries”

In detail

For more than 20 years, John Sulston worked on the biology of C. elegans, studying particularly its cell lineage and its genome. Collaboration between his group and that of Bob Waterston in St Louis, Missouri resulted in the publication of the nematode DNA sequence in 1998. He was the Founder Director of the Wellcome Trust Sanger Centre from 1992 to 2000, where one third of the task to sequence the human genome was completed. In 2002 he co-authored ‘The Common Thread’, an account of the science, politics and ethics of the human genome project. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society and an Honorary Fellow of Pembroke College, Cambridge.

What he offers you

John Sulston has been instrumental in laying out several of the foundations upon which almost all experimental work in the worm depends. His mapping of the human genome has put him at the forefront of scientific endeavour. In his presentations he provides a gripping insider’s story of the Human Genome Project and fascinating insights into how he took a global approach to discover the mechanisms that led to the development of the worm and also provides a great illustration of resourcefulness.

How he presents

One comes away impressed from John’s powerful and memorable talks, delivered eloquently with humour, with the sense that he and his team could not have omitted even one step without losing the battle they fought for free access to crucial scientific information and inquiry. He is very much a scientist’s scientist.

Stiglitz). He is the Professor of Economics at the University of California, Berkeley. He is perhaps best known for his article, “The Market for Lemons: Quality Uncertainty and the Market Mechanism”, published in Quarterly Journal of Economics in 1970, in which he identified certain severe problems that afflict markets characterized by asymmetrical information.

“Disagreeing with any rules that limit the nature of the ingredients in economic models, he contributes immeasurably by simply being the kind of person he is”

In detail

George Akerlof received his B.A. degree from Yale University in 1962, his Ph.D. degree from MIT and has taught at the London School of Economics. In 1966 he began teaching at the University of California, Berkeley, becoming Goldman Professor of Economics in 1980. His research often draws from other disciplines, including psychology, anthropology, and sociology, and he played an important role in the development of behavioural economics. He is the 2006 President of the American Economic Association, serving earlier as vice president and member of the executive committee. He is also on the North American Council of the Econometric Association.

What he offers you

Honoured for his theory of asymmetric information and its effect on economic behaviour, George Akerlof is perhaps the most imaginative and creative applier of insights from other disciplines and his presentations provide actionable information drawing from his experience and knowledge gained in various fields. His work has had profound implications for the organization and regulation of important real markets such as the labour market, the market for health insurance, and markets for financial commodities.

How he presents

An outstanding speaker, George Akerlof is easy to work with and his presentations are original, insightful and filled with a veritable wealth of useful, relevant information based on his solid research and understanding of global economics.

Lauded for a lifetime of original thinking that has addressed some of the most important long-standing questions in macroeconomics, Edward Prescott describes himself as an econometrician, namely someone dedicated to making neoclassical economics quantitative. His contributions to economics have not only fueled advances in theoretical work, but have also had profound impacts at a policy level and his audiences benefit from this wisdom.

How he presents

Having transformed the methods of macroeconomic thinking, Edward Prescott lays out theory in his presentations, so simply and clearly, knowing and understanding the importance and power of good language. His audiences don’t learn to be acolytes of Ed Prescott – they learn to be excellent researchers, to think for themselves.

Her influence extends far beyond the borders of her country, inspiring hope that Islam, democracy and all human rights can co-exist despite the challenges faced in these turbulent times. Defying government obstacles, she also created and is the leader of one of the first independent, non-governmental human rights organizations in Iran: The Society for the Protection of the Rights of the Child.

“Shirin Ebadi received the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo for her democracy-building efforts and her work to improve human rights in Iran”

In detail

As a woman in Iran, Shirin Ebadi’s life has paralleled the dramatic changes within her country, and her call for dissent and support for human rights has rung clear during the political and religious upheaval in the Middle East. Making history as the first woman judge in Iran, Ebadi was stripped of her basic rights by the religious revolutionaries, whom she once supported, who declared women unfit to serve as judges. She fought her way back as a human rights lawyer, defending women and children in controversial, politically charged cases. She has been arrested and been the target of assassination, but through it all, has spoken out with quiet bravery on behalf of victims of injustice and discrimination.

What she offers you

Shirin Ebadi is a formidible and courageous speaker, who received the Legion d’honneur degree from French president Jacques Chirac in 2006. Having received more than 20 honorary doctorate degrees from different countries in USA, Canada, Turkey and Australia, she provides her respected unique perspective on issues including philosophy, religion & spirituality, ethics, religion, society, motivation and inspiration, development policy and law.

How she presents

Independent, outspoken, and incredibly intelligent, Shirin Ebadi is a towering figure with a commanding voice that will not be silenced. She courageously champions democracy and basic human rights for women, children and all individuals.

Nobel Prize Laureate in Economics 2009

Prof. Oliver E. Williamson was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics for “his analysis of economic governance, especially the boundaries of the firm” in 2009, sharing it with Elinor Ostrom. He is the Edgar F. Kaiser Professor Emeritus of Business, Economics and Law and Professor of the Graduate School, both at the University of California, Berkeley, USA. He is a prominent author in the area of transaction cost economics and related disciplines and is credited with the development of the term “Information Impactedness”, which applies in situations where it is difficult to ascertain what the costs to information are.

“Oliver E. Williamson is one of the leading economic theorists of our time”

In detail

Oliver E. Williamson received his B.Sc. in management from the MIT Sloan School of Management, M.B.A. from Stanford University, and his Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University. He is recognised for developing a theory where business firms serve as structures for conflict resolution, and has argued that hierarchical organisations, such as companies, represent alternative governance structures, which differ in their approaches to resolving conflicts of interest.

What he offers you

Author of one of the most important books on the corporation, Prof. Williamson has been instrumental in establishing economic governance as a field of research. His focus on the cost of transactions has led him to distinguish between repeated case-by-case bargaining on the one hand and relationship-specific contracts on the other. He is highly sought-after by government organisations and corporations eager to reap the benefits of his considerable expertise, in-depth research and proven economic strategies.

How he presents

He travels the world spreading a message of peace and applying the lessons learned from the Central American Peace Process. Dr. Arias has been awarded numerous honorary doctorates from universities around the world as well as a number of prestigious international awards for his role in the Central American peace process. A highly experienced and motivated speaker, Dr. Arias is now in high demand at conferences throughout the globe.

“A leading political figure”

In detail

After serving as Professor of Political Science at the University of Costa Rica, he was appointed Minister of Planning and Economic Policy. He was elected to Congress in 1978 and secretary-general of the National Liberation party in 1981 before finally being elected president in 1986. In 1987, President Arias drafted a peace plan to end the regional crisis. Widely recognised as the Arias Peace Plan, his initiative culminated in the signing of the Esquipulas II Accords by all the Central American presidents on August 7 1987. This remarkable achievement was recognised internationally and in that same year President Arias received the Nobel Peace Prize.

What he offers you

Dr. Arias uses his experiences to focus on such issues as human development, democracy and demilitarisation. His positions on Central American issues have become the standards by which many people in the US Congress and elsewhere have come to judge United States policy-making.

How he presents

A highly accomplished speaker, articulate and to the point, Dr Arias presentations are highly engaging and fluid, his style is nonetheless very well punctuated allowing time to absorb his powerful messages.
