Prof. Dr. Hans Tietmeyer is widely regarded as one of the foremost experts on international financial matters. He is a Member of the Board of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) in Basel (current Vice President since 2003). He serves as a Member of the Supervisory Board of several companies and institutions. Current president of the European Business School and an architect of the Euro, having initiated and promoted the introduction of the new common European currency, he remains one of the most important figures in European finance.

Following an academic background Dr Tietmeyer moved into international economics and banking. In 1962 he started his career in the Federal Ministry of Economics. In 1982 he became Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, where he was responsible for issues related to financial policy, international monetary policy, EU matters and the preparation of World Economic Summits. He became a Member of the Board of Directors of the Deutsche Bundesbank and of the Central Bank Council in 1990. After two years as Vice President he became President of the Deutsche Bundesbank in 1993, a position he held until 1999.
